It doesn’t matter whether you are new to the job market or transitioning to a new job, you want all your technical skills to be assessed and valued, thus making you just the right candidate for the role.

Here we have for you the technical skills and how you could showcase them on your resume and at the time of the interviews.

What are Technical Skills?

The hard skills that are relatively easy to quantify and describe are called technical skills. For instance, you could either know C++ or you don’t. Yes, you could be a beginner or advanced but it is still something that can be quantified.

Soft skills are the opposite of hard skills and these are very tough to quantify. For instance, if you have a skill in problem-solving, it cannot be quantified easily, thus it is a soft skill. Yes, you might take the example of your previous jobs and experiences and say that you are a good problem solver, but it is still not quantifiable.

When you are applying for a new job, you need to make sure that you are showcasing both, your hard and soft skills. The recruiters want to see both your skills and want to find out if you can use your technical or hard skills to solve real-world problems.

Showcasing Technical Skills on Resume

To highlight your technical skills you could keep aside a section in your resume for the technical skills only. As you create the technical skills section, you can then divide it into groups. For instance, if it is the resume for a developer, the skills might be grouped into sections for the programming languages, frameworks, libraries, APIs, etc.

You could have a very extended list of skills, but you must at least include half of it in your resume. This makes it easier for the recruiter to look for the required skills.

Technical Skills that one could Showcase in Resume

Resume

Picking out the right technical skills to include in your resume might be tough, so you can just pick the ones that are mentioned on the job posting. Generally, both, the required and the desired skills are put on the posting.

You should also make sure that the wording from the posting matches the one from your resume as much as possible. This makes the recruiter assured about your sincerity while reading the job posting, says that you are a good person for the position and that you invested some time in tailoring your resume.

Also, sometimes the resumes are scanned for keywords that match the job posting, thus if you have matched your skills with the words on the resume, there are more chances that your resume will be shortlisted.

  • Web development: Debugging, Photoshop, Illustrator, Git, WordPress

  • Cloud-based services: AWS, VMware, Azure

  • Cybersecurity: Cryptography, automation, malware analysis, SIEM tools

Showcasing Technical Skills during Interview

The main part that your resume plays is that of lifting you to the next level of selection that is the interview. In the interview process, there will be different occasions when you will have the opportunity to show your technical skills. If the interview is for a technical position, then it might be a little complex including the home screenings, assignments, traditional interviews and the technical interview.

Here are a few ways you could highlight your technical skills throughout the interview.

Technical Interviews

Technical Interviews

The technical interviews are held to gauge your technical skills and assess if your revel matches what has been mentioned in the resume. These kinds of interviews begin with questions that dig into these skills straightaway.

  • Tell us about the most difficult technical challenge that you have faced and how did you resolve it?

  • Is there anyone technology you cannot live without? What is it?

  • Tell us about any recent technology that you learnt. Why and How did you learn it?

It is common for the interviewer to double-check your resume and confirm whether all that you have written there is right. When asked such questions you could go deep into the subject and show off your knowledge.

But, the main part of an interview of this kind is to solve one or more technical problems. You might also be asked to code in real-time.

Apart from Technical Skills on your Resume, Analytical Skills are equally important during interviews. Analytical skills as the skill of using logic and reasoning and solve everyday problems.
